This highly cinematic new production from award-winning director Damiano Michieletto sets Verdi’s classic tragedy of passion, betrayal and revenge in an imaginary criminal world.

Captured live over the European summer from the extraordinary setting of Circus Maximus – Rome’s ancient chariot racing arena, hosting an opera performance for the first time – this highly cinematic new production from award-winning director Damiano Michieletto sets Verdi’s classic tragedy of passion, betrayal and revenge in an imaginary criminal world.

Based on a play by Victor Hugo, Verdi’s fervent, unforgettable work forms part of  the “popular trilogy”, alongside Il Trovatore and La Traviata.

Centring on the dramatic figure of the hunchbacked court jester Rigoletto (acclaimed baritone Roberto Frontali, in a signature role), the work is – to paraphrase Opera di Roma’s musical director Daniele Gatti – a profound study of man, with the question of deformity inextricably linked to guilt. Tenor Iván Ayón Rivas sings the role of the licentious Duke, and fast-rising soprano Rosa Feola plays Rigoletto’s daughter, Gilda.

In cinemas 17, 18 & 21 April 2021. Visit Palace Opera & Ballet for participating cinemas and screening times.

Enter below for your chance to win one of five double passes, thanks to Palace Opera & Ballet.
