The longstanding Carlton deli is giving away 30 kilos of dried pasta and tinned San Marzano tomatoes; heat-at-home lasagnes; Pidapipó gelato tubs; Mount Zero Olives oils; and a whopping 84 bottles of wine.
We’re all dreaming of the outside world, getting together with friends and family, and finally throwing a dinner party again – after months of household-only meals. King & Godfree wants to help make it a reality by giving one lucky Broadsheet reader everything they’d need to throw a stellar pasta party or two (or three, or plenty).
Refresh your pasta stores with 30 kilos of dried penne, spaghetti, fusilli, rigatoni and fettuccine; tinned San Marzano tomatoes; bottles of passata and sugo; Degrassi mushroom pasta and vodka pasta sauces. Also included are King & Godfree’s own ready-made sauces (bolognese, Napoli and pesto), gnocchi, a reheat-ready lasagne and takeaway pastas from Agostino.
Also included are pantry staples in the form of Mount Zero Olives organic olive oil, olives and lentils; Leonardi Oro Nobile vinegar; 64 cans of Sirena tuna; and smoked almonds. Sweets-wise, there are tubs from King & Godfree’s sibling gelateria Pidapipó, drinking chocolate from Grounded Pleasures, honeycomb dark chocolate from Monsieur Truffle and a host of Italian chocolates.
The main event might be the wines, though: there are seven cases – amounting to a whopping 84 bottles – of Dal Zotto Pucino prosecco, Hesketh Regional Selections fiano, Head Wines Montepulciano, Aquilani pinot grigio, Tar & Roses sangiovese and many others.
The epic giveaway is part of King & Godfree’s 150th anniversary festivities, a six-month celebration that kicks off next week with a pasta masterclass hosted by Julia Busuttil Nishimura.
The heritage-listed corner store, on Lygon and Faraday streets, has been operating as a grocery store since 1871, during the Victorian gold rush. Edwin King and George Godfree established the business in 1884, before Carlo Valmorbida purchased the corner store in 1955 and turned it into a labyrinth of shelves stacked with bottles of wine and Italian goods such as Lavazza coffee, Sirena tuna and staples such as Parmigiano-Reggiano. His grandsons Luca Sbardella and Jamie Valmorbida run it to this day, now with an espresso bar, delicatessen, grocery, wine bar and rooftop bar.
