Celebrating 90 years of one of the world’s most iconic perfumes – Tabu!
Born into the world of fragrance in 1932, Tabu, one of the world’s most iconic fragrances, is this year celebrating its 90th birthday.
Created by legendary French perfumer Jean Carles for perfume house Dana, Tabu has long been known as one of the world’s greatest classic fragrances which has inspired many modern-day perfumes including the famous Yves Saint Laurent Opium.
Tabu’s heady mix is a combination of top notes of bergamot, neroli orange, rose and jasmine with base notes of amber, musk and patchouli. Formerly known as an “Oriental” scent, the category name has been changed in recent years to “Amber.”
As Dana’s first fragrance, the perfume has a colourful history. Carles was well known for his wonderful creations containing unusual substances. In creating Tabu, he was instructed to make a fragrance for a ‘lady of the night’. Thus, Tabu – a play on the word ‘taboo’ was created – considered at the time to be both sensual and shocking.
Throughout its extraordinary run, Tabu has since achieved legendary status, passed on from generation to generation as a perfume created for women who want to be noticed. Today, the emotional connection that many wearers have to Tabu can often be traced back to what their mothers and grandmothers wore – evoking heady memories of watching them getting ready for fancy nights out on the town.
