About the film
Premiering at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and winning the Audience Award: World Cinema Dramatic, SHAYDA, starring Iranian French actress Zar Amir Ebrahimi (Holy Spider) alongside newcomer Selina Zahednia, will release in Australian cinemas on October 5.
The film follows SHAYDA, a brave Iranian mother who finds refuge in an Australian’s women’s shelter with her six-year-old daughter, Mona. Over the Persian New Year, they take solace in Nowruz rituals and new beginnings, but when her estranged husband re-enters their lives, Shayda’s path to freedom is jeopardised.
SHAYDA is inspired by director Noora Niasari’s personal experience inside an Australian women’s shelter living alongside other women and children seeking a life without fear.
