Dirty Three’s latest album, Love Changes Everything, is a triumphant return for the legendary trio, their first album in over twelve years. With Warren Ellis on violin and piano, Mick Turner on guitar, and Jim White on drums, the band delivers instrumental, experimental, and post-rock sounds. The interplay is wild and mesmerizing as ever, balancing raw energy with a newfound patience. Three decades into their career, Ellis jokes that they're "older and meaner, sadder and totally dangerous."
Each track is titled Love Changes Everything (i-vi), creating a unified story in six suites. It all begins with a delicate, almost haunting melody that builds into a cacophony. The second song starts with a serene violin piece before exploding into electrifying noise, combining punk rock and jazz.
Recorded in just five days but mixed over a year, there's great attention to detail. Soundscapes are rich and layered, with moments of clarity giving way to muddy, distorted guitar riffs and pounding drums.
