Announcing our 2024 Young Book Reviewers’ competition

Our Young Book Reviewers’ Competition is back! The comp is open to Australian residents aged 12 or younger. Entries must be submitted by a parent, guardian or teacher (with parents’ permission). Instructions for entry can be found on our website in Terms & Conditions.
To enter: Review a children’s book from any genre. There is no word limit for reviews.

All longlisted and winning reviews will be published at Alphabet Soup’s website:
http://www.alphabetsoup.net.au.
Winner of the Junior category (students in Kindy, Preprimary, Year 1 and Year 2) will receive a $30 book voucher.
Winner of the Primary category (Year 3 and above) will receive a $50 book voucher.
The school that enters the highest number of reviews by students will also receive a prize.
Entries close 31 July 2024 and winners will be announced 12 August 2024.

Alphabet Soup’s Young Book Reviewers’ Competition: Terms & Conditions
Closing date: 31 July 2024
Entries must be submitted by a parent, guardian or teacher (with parents’ permission). Email entries to:
editor@alphabetsoup.net.au with “Review Competition” in the subject line.
The competition is open to Australian residents aged 12 or younger.
Individual entries only; you cannot collaborate with another person to write your review.
You may enter more than once, but each entry must include a separate email with:
The title of the book being reviewed, its author and illustrator (if applicable).
Entrant’s full name and age
Current grade at school (e.g. Year 1)
Australian postal address (school or home or PO Box)
Parent’s email address
Parent’s mobile number
The statement: “This is [your name]’s own unaided work, and it has not been published elsewhere. A.I. has not been used in the creation of this review.”
The review must be of a children’s book (but not books generally accepted to be YA) from any genre: Junior fiction, novels, picture books, poetry, biography, graphic novels, cookbooks etc are all acceptable. If in doubt, we are happy for your grown-up to email us and check before sending your review.
You can choose to review any book you own or borrow, but you cannot enter a review of a book if that book was provided to you (or a family member) as a review copy.
There is no word limit for reviews.
Work must be original and previously unpublished (in print, and online).
The use of A.I. (Artificial intelligence) in the creation of the review is not permitted.
Entry is free.
The closing date is 31 July 2024, 11.59pm, Western Australian time.
Entrants retain copyright over their work but by entering this competition the entrant authorises Alphabet Soup to publish their review at Alphabet Soup’s website
http://www.alphabetsoup.net.au if the review is longlisted, or is the winning review.
Alphabet Soup reserves the right not to award prizes in any section at the discretion of the judge.
Winners will be personally notified via email, and publicly announced via Alphabet Soup’s website and social media on 12 August 2024.
One winner will be selected in each of two categories: Junior (students in Kindy, Preprimary, Year 1 and Year 2) and Primary (students in Years 3 and above). The school that enters the highest number of reviews by students will also receive a prize.
Prizes: all longlisted reviews will be posted to Alphabet Soup’s website
http://www.alphabetsoup.net.au. The winner of the Junior category will also receive a book voucher to the value of $30. The winner of the Primary category will receive a book voucher to the value of $50. The school with the most reviews entered will receive a book voucher to the value of $100. The winners’ addresses (and entrants’ contact details) will be held by Alphabet Soup only until the point of prize distribution and will then be destroyed.
The decision of the judge is final.
Immediate family members of Alphabet Soup staff are not eligible to enter.
