Eight extraordinary musicians, eight instruments and 40,000 years of making music. The cheeky piccolo, the mellifluous cello, the didgeridoo and the human voice… Possibilities stretch from here to the edge of the horizon.
Musica Viva Australia presents Ensemble Q and William Barton playing works old, not so old and freshly-minted. There’s Brahms’ First Cello Sonata, reimagined in a luscious arrangement for wind quintet; and Ligeti’s Six Bagatelles, a spiky, folky showcase of virtuosity. Then there’s Paul Dean’s lyrical Concerto for Cello written, with heart-on-sleeve emotion, for performer and Ensemble Q co-founder Trish Dean. And, finally, the world premiere of a new commission from William Barton, Journey to the Edge of the Horizon, which explores the kaleidoscope of sounds on stage.
Barton says, “Journey to the Edge of the Horizon is me aligning my cultural heritage and legacy of the landscape with the modern world. I imagine bringing people to a space and time – I want to take people there.”
