Feels like it was only back in March that Stieg Larsson's blockbusting trilogy first burst into cinemas. Oh wait - it was. While Hollywood shoots its inevitable remake, we can watch the second instalment of the Swedish original, with the perfectly cast Noomi Rapace as title character Lisbeth Salander.
Rapace evocatively mingles fear and fury as Salander is falsely accused of a triple murder that appears tied to an imminent Millennium magazine exposé of sex trafficking. But crusading journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) is sure Salander is innocent, and starts hunting the real killer. The connection between Salander and Blomkvist feels strong despite Rapace and Nyqvist never sharing the screen until the final scene. Lena Endre also gets some welcome screen time as Millennium publisher (and Blomkvist's long-term lover) Erika Berger.
Like its predecessor, it's not high cinema. It's pacy, plot-packed, and most intelligible to fans of the book. As one of those fans, I was disappointed to be denied a montage of Salander's epic IKEA shopping trip. Also, Salander doesn't get a boob job. But otherwise, the film faithfully replicates the book's solemn tone throughout its slide into absurd, James Bond-like antics.
