Jeremy Brett plays the legendary violin playing Victorian detective with a great deal of style, he is sided not only by Edward Hardwicke and then David Burke as his aide de camp Doctor Watson but also from the sumptuous production design and magnificent sets (Granada, who made the series, purpose built a Baker Street set which still stands today and is part of their studio tour).

Star studded casts and brilliant story telling make this the kind of show that never wears out it's welcome. This is a quite stunning box set - a wonderful keepsake of a marvellous series.

Holmes, who first appeared in publication in 1887, was featured in four novels and 56 short stories. The first story, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890.
