Head on Foundation invites photographers to submit works to the 2011 photographic portrait competition.
Prizes will be awarded for the best 3 images. The selection of images will be done anonymously based on the power of the photograph rather than the celebrity of the subject or photographer. Images can range from film to digitally produced using any photographic technique in colour and/or black & White.
Further prizes will be awarded to images selected for ‘The Critic’s Prize’ and for ‘People’s Choice’.
Finalists’ work will be selected by Judith Blackall, MCA Head of Artistic Programs, Sandra Harrison, SMH Photographic Managing Editor, multiple award winning photographer, Sean Izzard and Head On curator Moshe Rosenzveig. The ‘Critic’s Prize’ will be selected by photography critic Robert McFarlane.
Total value of prizes is approximately $50,000.

Head On finalists will be exhibited at the Australian Centre for Photography, Sydney 5 May - 11 June 2011.
Head On, now in its eighth year, has established itself as one of Australia's major photographic portrait exhibitions. It is committed to advancing photography as a popular art form and to supporting photographers from all genres through its exhibition and other related activities.
The show is supported by Canon, Adobe, Momento, Sandisk, Epson, Kayell, Lowepro, Focal Press, ACDSee, MailChimp, PureMac, Pixel Perfect Prolab, Nik Software, Buy-n-Shoot, Arts Hotel, Centennial Parklands, ColourProcess, Frankel Lawyers, Agileware, Le Bukhara, Shaw Vineyard Estate, National Arts School, AIPP, ACMP and the Australian Centre for Photography.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
1.The exhibition is open to all artists residing in Australia.
2.Each entrant may submit up to three images.
3.Images can be submitted only online via Head On website.
4.Images submitted have to comply with the following:
1.Taken with at least 8 megapixel camera, or film
2.Resized to 2400 pixels on the widest side (72dpi)
3.Saved in Adobe RGB 1998 colour space
4.Saved in Jpg format compression level 8
5.You need to add your name (first, last) and image title during the submission process
6.You will be able to add a short description (up to 100 words) during the submission process
5.Payment (in Australian dollars) can be done only online via the PayPal secure payment gate (you may use your PayPal account or credit card). Please retain your payment receipt details.
6.Entry fee of $30 per image (discounted to $25 per image for members) is non-refundable. Any entry not accompanied by payment will not be eligible for the competition and/or exhibition. Please print a copy of the receipt as no other tax invoice will be issued.
7.Deadline for submission 11pm (EDT), Sunday 13 March 2011.
8.Copyright in the images remains the property of the photographer.
9.The entrant (finalists only) consents to reproducing the entrant's image(s) at no charge in all publicity and promotion of the exhibition and Head On Photo Festival inclusive of all electronic or print media at the discretion of the organisers, to be included in the exhibition catalogue(s), limited edition postcards, and to be posted on Head On website.
10.Non finalists may be included in a slide show to be screened during the show electronically and in a DVD catalogue.
11.Finalists’ work will be selected by National Gallery of Victoria Photography Curator Isobel Crombie, Award winning Photographer Anthony Browell, Picture Editor and Vu agent Isabelle Rouvillois and Head On curator Moshe Rosenzveig.
12.The finalists will be advised by phone and/or email by Monday 4 April.
13.Finalists will be required to upload a high resolution file as specified below to our server by Monday 11 April
1.Final image files uploaded by the finalists, must be at the largest size available without any resizing done in Photoshop or any other image manipulation software. The image itself should not have border around it
2.Finalists' files must be saved in Adobe RGB 1998 colour space in JPG format compression level 12
3.The high resolution files uploaded by the finalists will be printed by Pixel Perfect Prolab. No corrections will be made to the file. Head On or Pixel Perfect Prolab will do their utmost to ensure the highest quality printing is achieved however will not be responsible for ‘misinterpretations’ of the photographer’s intention
4.It is the photographer’s responsibility to ensure their equipment is properly calibrated in order to achieve a colour-accurate print
5.Final images will be printed up to 48x70, with a border on A1 size paper
14.The photos selected will be exhibited between 5 May – 11 June 2011 at the Australian Centre for Photography.
15.Winners will be announced at the opening night on 5 May 2011 at the Australian Centre for Photography.
16.Unsuccessful applicants will not be contacted.
17.Head On will exercise all reasonable care with the works submitted but will not be responsible for any loss or damage while in its custody or in transit or being transferred or reproduced by any means including digital copying and on-line transmission.
18.Finalists’ prints will be kept by Head On for a period of 5 years and may be exhibited in retrospective shows during that time. At the end of this period the prints will be destroyed.
19.All images submitted will be available to all the judges for consideration.
20.The selection panel’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
21.By entering the competition you confirm that you are the creator and owner of the work, that you have the permission of the subject or where appropriate the subject's parent or guardian, that the work does not infringe copyright, the image was not taken in circumstances of trespass or invading anyone's legal right of privacy, breach of industrial law or applicable industry code and does not to the best of your knowledge defame anyone nor was your conduct in taking the image likely to be misleading or deceptive and that you agree with the above Terms & Conditions.
