One of the great comic geniuses from the Golden Age of Hollywood, W.C. Fields was able to turn his variety stage persona which itself was just an exagerrated version of himself into a massively popular screen figure, popular across both the silent screen and the early years of sound. This month Beyond Home Entertainment release a rather fab collection of six of his best known comedy shorts and to celebrate we have five copies to give away!
With his distinctive Top Hat and walking cane as well as rotund appearance and nasal voice Fields knew (like Chaplin before him) that his audience liked the comedy of familiarity, these six shorts (The Golf Specialist, Pool Sharks, The Parmacist, The Fatal Glass of Beer, The Barber Shop and The Dentist) showcase him at the very peak of his powers.
Fields was a brilliant improvisor and would add much to every script he worked on, although slapstick was a big part of his ouvre he was also a highly intelligent comedic actor with great feel. Still highly hilarious today these shorts are a great introduction to anyone new to Fields and a brilliant keepsake for people who already know how good he is.
