This month Madman have some very choice British comedy DVD’s getting a release and we have five Prizepacks for you giving you the chance to get your hands on An Audience With Billy Connolly, Further Up Pompeii and Six Dates With Barker.
First up is An Audience with Billy Connolly, which remains one of the funniest couple of hours you’ll ever spend. Connolly is at the very top of his game in this live performance from 1985. Full of anecdotes and flights of fancy it’s uproariously funny.
Further Up Pompeii sees the legendary Frankie Howerd returning as one of his best loved characters Lurcio The Slave, from the sitcom Up Pompeii. This one off make in the early nineties sees the now free Lurcio running the Bacchus Vino Bar. Howerd is on top form here having recently been rediscovered by the student set and as always his asides to the camera are a joy to behold.
Finally there is Six Dates with Barker a superb 1970’s anthology which featured Ronnie Barker starring in six individual comedy playlets. The cream of British writing and acting talent including John Cleese, Spike Milligan, David Jason, Freddie Jones and Lesley-Anne Down are involved and some of the stories you might find have a familiar ring to them. The Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town would be recounted as the running serial in the first series of the The Two Ronnies. The Removals Man would be turned into sitcom, Clarence in the 1980’s (this was written by Barker himself) and The Odd Job would later be turned into a movie starring Graham Chapman and David Jason.
