School Writing Challenge


We invite all students in years 3 - 8 to enter the Cooks' Cottage School Writing Challenge.
 
 
 With the imminent arrival of the replica HMB Endeavour students can learn all about Captain Cook and his importance to Australian history. To commemorate this visit, Cooks' Cottage, in conjunction with the Australian National Maritime Museum, would like to invite all students in years’ three to eight, to participate in this amazing opportunity.
 
 
 Three winners will be announced and prizes to the value of over $100 are on offer to each winner and their school.

Years 3 to 4
Choose one of the following pictures to write your story or poem. [Up to 200 words]

 
Every picture tells a story. What story does your picture tell?








Years 5 to 6

Imagine you are Zachary Hicks, one of Captain Cook’s crew. Describe how you felt being the first person on the ship, to see the East Coast of Australia and shout the words “Land Ahoy”. Then explain how you felt as you landed in Botany Bay. [Up to 300 words]

 
 
Years 7 to 8
Captain Cook and his crew have just arrived back in England after their two years and 11 month voyage on the Endeavour. You are the lucky reporter who gets to interview Captain James Cook. What questions would you ask him? What would his answers be? Write an article [up to 400 words], in a question and answer format. [Clue: you may have to do a bit of research!]

 
 
Eligibility

Only Victorian students in Years 3 – 8 are eligible to enter. Entries will be judged in three year level groups.

 
 
Group 1: Years 3 – 4
Group 2: Years 5 – 6
Group 3: Years 7 - 8

 
 
Rules of entry

1. All stories must be original.

 
 
2. Only one entry per student will be accepted.

 
 
3. No late entries will be accepted.

 
 
4. Word limits for stories are as follows:

Years 3 – 4 Up to 200 words

Years 5 – 6 Up to 300 words

Years 7 – 8 Up to 400 words

 
 
5. For all entries, a completed entry form (PDF, 58kb) must be attached to each story for the entry to be valid.

 
 
6. The judges’ decision is final.

 
 
7. All entries must be received by 5pm, Friday 30 March 2012 .

Cooks Cottage School Writing Challenge
 
Terms and Conditions
 1.By entering this competition, you agree to abide by these terms and conditions.
2.This competition is being run by Melbourne City Council (“Promoter”) of 240 Little Collins Street, Melbourne VIC 3000.
 3.The competition commences at midnight Wednesday 1 February 2012 and closes at 5pm on Friday 30 March 2012.
 4.Entry is open to any student attending a Victorian school in year 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 , except immediate family members of the Promoter or its agents or contractors.
5.The total value of the prize pool is approximately $450 comprising 3 prizes of approximately $150.
6.The single best entry from each year level group (Group 1: Years 3-4; Group 2: Years 5-6; Group 3: Years 7-8) will be selected as the winner. There will be three winners in total. This competition is a game of skill and the winners will be selected at the absolute discretions of the judges. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
 7.The prize for each winner is a family pass for two adults and up to four children under 15 to visit HMB Endeavour; opportunity to meet the Captain of the Endeavour; Certificate of Achievement; replica model of the Endeavour; Endeavour cap; book – Captain Cook and the Endeavour; map of Captain Cook’s voyages; pencil of Captain Cook’s voyages; pencil sharpener; family pass to Cooks’ Cottage; and book for the library of the winner’s school.
 8.Prizes are non-transferable or redeemable for cash and are subject to availability.
 9.Incomprehensible, illegible and incomplete entries will be automatically deemed invalid and the Promoter reserves the right to exclude any entry for any reason whatsoever.
10.All entries become the property of the Promoter.
 11.Only one entry per person is permitted.
 12.If the prize is unavailable, for whatever reason, the Promoter reserves the right to substitute the prize for a prize of equal or greater value. It is a condition of accepting the prize that each winner must comply with all the conditions of use of the prize and any requirements imposed by the prize supplier. Each prize must be taken as stated and no compensation will be payable if the winner’s are unable to use the prize as stated or provided.
 13.If the winner does not claim the prize by 5pm on 18 April 2012, that winner will forfeit the prize in its entirety and it may be awarded to the first runner up in that group. The Promoter will not be liable to any winner who cannot be contacted or does not collect their prize by the time required.
14.The Promoter reserves the right to request the winner’s teacher, school representative, parent or guardian provide proof of the winner’s identity, age and grade prior to collecting the prize.  If the Promoter cannot validate the identity of the winner to its satisfaction, the winner will forfeit the prize in whole and no substitute will be offered or compensation paid.
 15.No responsibility is accepted by the promoter for late, lost or misdirected entries.
16.A valid return email address must be provided for ease of correspondence. The Promoter will make all reasonable efforts to deliver letters and prizes to the school assemblies of winning entrants.
17.The winner will be notified by phone and/or email on 13 April 2012 or later date.
18.All entries and any copyright subsisting in the entries become and remain the property of the Promoter. The Promoter collects personal information about entrants to include entrants in the competition and will comply with the City of Melbourne’s Privacy Policy, which is available at www.melbourne.vic.gov.au
 19.The Promoter will not be liable for any loss or damage whatsoever suffered, including but not limited to direct or consequential loss, or personal injury suffered or sustained during the course of the prize winning sailing adventure or in connection with the redemption of and/or use of any other prizes. Any change in the value of the prize claimed is not the responsibility of the Promoter.
 20.The consent of the entrant’s parent or legal guardian to these terms and conditions must be indicated clearly on all entries.
