Yep, it says 'excluding boot' or similar.

I reckon if you look at the picture of the car that there are about 20 balls across the width of the front windscreen.  There's probably about the same, maybe a few more, along the length of the car.  Probably a few less, on average, for the height of the car (given seats etc.)

So, just for example, 20x25x15 balls would be only 7,500 balls.

I might lower my guesses!

29,281 only one away from the actual amount of 29,280!
But I think I read too, no balls in boot...someone might need to check this.

I remember this one. Interestingly it was 610 full boxes emptied into the car. I had wondered if it would be a multiple of 48 and it was. I just didn't get it right Smile That sort ofcalculation isn't valid here though, unless you can work out in what quantities they would have bought the red and white balls in? Smile

Do we reckon these balls are ping pong ball sized? I'm trying to get an approx. number using maths calculations! However unless I know the ball size it's not possible!

some numbers that may help:

Yaris dimensions are 3.8m (L) x 1.7m (W) x 1.5m (H) - which would be about 10m^3 or 10,000 litres if it were a block (which it isn't)

Out of that the boot size is 286 litres.

There appears to be approximately 20 balls across the windscreen, filling the 1.7m width, which implies ball diameter of 85mm.  That would be a pretty large ball - a bit bigger than a cricket ball.

According to the car websites I researched, the passenger volume/interior volume of a 5 door Toyota Yaris is 85.1 cubic feet. I guess this will need to be adjusted for space taken up by seats and such? Not sure how they get this figure. I also found a figure for the 'boot' space for this car, which is 15.6 cubic feet. (Does a hatch actually have a boot? How would they keep the balls out of this space I wonder?).

So the very rough volume we are looking at to fill is 85.1 - 15.6 = 69.5 cubic feet. This equals 1.96802 m 3.

The volume of an 8cm diameter ball (as an example), I think is .000067 m3 (please correct me if anyone calculates otherwise!). But there is space around the balls that isn't filled. So one has to adjust for that.

A hatch would have a parcel shelf which would be able to prevent balls filling the boot space beneath. Your figures suggest close to 30,000 as a maximum.

Edit: a bit of reading on the Kepler Conjecture suggests spheres would probably take up 65% of the space, the other 35% being gaps, which brings us back to about 20000.

Knock a bit more off for seats...

Sorry, my calculation on the ball volume is incorrect, I had initially calculated a volume on a ping pong ball, but didn't scale it up correctly (I had a feeling it might be wrong!) I will discuss this further with the maths experts I know Smile

But at this stage it looks like there are quite a bit less balls than we thought, if they are around 8cm diameter.

Ok, so my hubby calculates that depending on how the balls are packed (which is hard to predict!) then there might be between 7000 and 12000 balls, providing they are 8 cm in diameter. It's complicated though, so we can't guarantee this is even close!

I'm still not 100% sure if the interior volume includes only useable space (and not the seats etc). What I was reading suggested it may just be the space available to the passenger. So may not need adjustment.
