Wes Anderson does wonders with celluloid whether its dry and surreal (The Royal Tenenbaums), exotic and comedic (The Darjeeling Limited), or even animated (Fantastic Mr Fox).
This year the writer/director/producer extraordinaire delivers Moonrise Kingdom, a film set off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, and packed with a cast of kooky characters – as is par for the course with his films.
The story evolves around two 12-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness, leaving authorities to hunt them down just as a violent storm is brewing off-shore. Naturally, then, a once-peaceful community is turned upside down.
Anderson regular, Bill Murray, returns as the father of the young girl, and his wife is played by the utterly brilliant Frances McDormand. Bruce Willis returns in fine form to the silver screen, playing the local sheriff. Edward Norton plays a Khaki Scout troop leader, while the cast is rounded out wonderfully with Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman and Bob Balaban all sharing screen time.
With its colour, chaos and queer sentiment, Moonrise Kingdom is sure to become an instant cult classic: as trippy a movie as anything Anderson has delivered before it.
