I remember as a teen when MTV first aired in Australia; one music video stood out amongst the hundreds of others and that was Peter Gabriel’s amazingly animated clip for Sledgehammer. The song was from Gabriel’s fifth solo album, So (the first of his LPs to feature a proper title, the rest having been self-titled) and it was only as an adult that I bought the full LP and realised the brilliant music behind the man.
To celebrate the So LP, as part of its Classic Albums series, Eagle Vision and Shock Entertainment have released So: The Definitive Authorised Story of the Album. Unlike your regular hum-drum music documentaries, this one is packed with fascinating facts and insight. It even includes a featurette, The Making Of Sledgehammer, which truly impressed.
The doco also looks at the recording of the other excellent songs from the album including Big Time (another amazing vid), Red Rain, Don’t Give Up (with Kate Bush), and In Your Eyes (by far one of the most beautifuly ballads in all of music history).
The video also includes interviews with Gabriel’s peers in the music industry including Laurie Anderson, Daniel Lanois, Manu Katché, amongst others.
