Formed ten years ago, the Organic Dairy Farmers of Australia (ODFA) is the first Australian certified organic group to break into the mainstream market.
The co-op is made up of a group of Victorian farmers who are deeply committed to farming sustainably, the well being of their cows, and producing milk and dairy products which are certified truly organic.
Certification integrity of the whole supply chain (farm-to-fork) is strictly adhered to ensuring that consumers who buy from its True Organic and ODFA brands, do get genuinely organic dairy products.
That means there are no chemical, fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides used on the farms who are part of the co-op, and cows are not treated with antibiotics and are free to graze outdoors, all year round on a diverse mix of grasses and herbs. yet our organic ethos is about much more than these things.
But it's more than just a strict set of rules for production, as farmers, they share a common set of values when it comes to how they care for their land, treat their animals, and in general, how they live their lives in the community both personally and professionally – it's their 'organic ethos'.
Today, the co-operative supplies 80% of all Australian certified organic milk and has seven products on the market including organic butter, cheese (Cheddar, Gouda, Mozzarella, Pecorino) and long-life milk.
Celebrating ten years in operation, the co-op is working with third-generation cheese-maker Matthieu Megard from Timboon Farmhouse Cheese to produce high quality gourmet cheese products and is opening a manufacturing plant in 2013 to produce commercial quantities of quality organic butter and cream.
