http://www.creammagazine.com/2013/02/win-copies-of-futuristic-action-thriller-%E2%80%98looper%E2%80%99-on-dvd/WIN! Copies of futuristic action thriller ‘Looper’ on DVDStemming from the reality-versus-virtual genre that has spawned huge blockbusters such as the Total Recall and Terminator franchises, with time travel thrown in to boot, when I first read about Looper – the futuristic action thriller in which time travel is only available on the black market, I thought it’d be a difficult narrative to follow.
Rather, the main plot is rather simple: that is, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, they’ll send their target 30 years into the past where a ‘looper’ – a hired gun – is waiting to pop them. The subplot gets somewhat messier, though, where loopers – once they’ve ‘gotten on a bit’ – are sent back themselves for assassination, otherwise known as ‘closing the loop’.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Joe, a looper who is darn good at his job. Bruce Willis plays future Joe.
Willis is great at this fantastical stuff, as was proven in The Sixth Sense, and of course 12 Monkeys. Gordon-Levitt, however, is kind of new at it, but he does a dandy job battling it out with the otherwise veteran action villains in this flick.
One thing that’s interesting to note, is the stylisation when the film is thrown into the future. Writer and director Rian Johnson appears to adore the colour red, and it’s this colour he chooses when he wants a heavily stylised futuristic object to stand out. Ironically, Johnson’s future is more dystopic than rosy…
