In 1947, Heyerdahl, accompanied by an inexperienced crew, undertook the expedition to prove his theory that Polynesia was first populated by South Americans not Asians and that ancient man used the ocean's currents as highways. The result of his journey – in which his crew faced raging storms, whales, circling sharks and razor sharp coral reefs – saw Heyerdahl become an international legend. His documentary of his journey won a 1951 Academy Award and his book sold over 50 million copies worldwide.
