Q. What does the BluApple™ do?

Q. How does BluApple™ work?
A.  BluApple™ helps reduce waste, BluApple™ can extend the life of fresh fruit and vegetables by up to three times and thus reduce waste. It does this by absorbing and neutralising ethylene gas produced by ripening fruit and vegetables. Ethylene gas promotes ripening and consequently accelerates spoilage. Placing a BluApple™ in the fruit bowl and in the fruit and vegetable crisper in the fridge will help fresh produce last longer by stopping the damaging effects of ethylene. BluApple™ keeps fruit and vegetables fresh for longer.

Q. How exactly does BluApple™ work?
A. Every BluApple™ has a sachet inside containing volcanic mineral with an active ethylene gas oxidizing ingredient called sodium permanganate. The sodium permanganate absorbs the ethylene gas and renders it inactive. At the end of three months the spent volcanic mineral can be sprinkled on to the garden as fertiliser and the BluApple™ can be re-loaded with a refill sachet. There’s no need to throw away a BluApple™ and this reduces waste in landfill. BluApple™ is much more effective than produce freshness bags currently available because it can actually absorb and remove ethylene gas from the entire storage space. Also, bags trap moisture that can encourage spoilage, are not re-usable and add to landfill.

Q. What is ethylene?
A. Ethylene is a colourless gas with a faint sweetish smell that is the naturally produced ripening hormone of some fruit and vegetables. It initiates and accelerates the ripening of fruit and vegetables, and then causes them to deteriorate.

Q. Why is it necessary to absorb ethylene gas?
A. Ethylene gas is given off naturally by fruits and vegetables to help them ripen. However, once it builds up in your refrigerator or fruit bowl, ethylene continues to speed up ripening and hasten spoilage (for example, ethylene makes bananas go black and soft). By lowering the level of ethylene gas surrounding fruits and vegetables, their shelf life can be greatly increased, slowing the maturation of fruit, protecting vegetables, and greatly reducing spoilage.
