Every year Spanish film lovers come together for the largest film festival of its kind in Australia, exclusively at Palace Cinemas. For twenty-three days across five states and seven Palace Cinema locations, the 16th Spanish Film Festival, presented by Estrella Damm, will delight audiences with the best of Spanish and Spanish-speaking Latin American cinema.

Here’s just a taste of what will screen at the Spanish Film Festival, presented by Estrella Damm, in 2013:

Winner of 10 Argentinian Academy Awards including Best Film, Director, Actor and Actress Clandestine Childhood (Infancia clandestina) is the debut of director Benjamín Ávila. Drawn from his own experiences as a young boy in the politically oppressed South America of the 1970s, the film follows 12 year old Juan.  After years in exile with his family, he returns to Argentina in 1979 to live under an assumed alias, while his revolutionary parents conspire to overthrow the ruling military dictatorship.

Set in Lima, Peru, Dark Heaven (Cielo oscuro) tells the story of an intense and unpredictable romance between Toño, a middle-aged tailor who is separated from his wife, and Natalia, a young drama student who commissions him to make costumes for her graduation play. What begins as an honest and hopeful romance takes a dark turn when one of Natalia’s old boyfriends appears again to join her theatre group, and a spiral jealousy and distrust ensues.

Directed by film critic Miguel Courtois Paternina Operation E (Operación E) is based on the true story of Operation Emmanuel, the hostage negotiations that led to the release of Colombian politician Clara Rojas and her son Emmanuel, born into captivity. Told from the perspective of the farmer given care of the baby, Operation E shows an unusual view of the Colombian guerilla war, far from the angle generally told by journalists and politicians.

Horror film aficionados will be excited to see The Body (El Cuerpo) from Spain’s Rodar y Rodar movie house. Directed by Oriol Paulo (Julia’s Eyes, 2010), in The Body a detective searches for the body of a femme fatale which has gone missing from a morgue.

The Summer Side (Del lado del verano), directed by, and starring  Antonia San Juan (who starred in Pedro Almodóvar’s All About My Mother), The Summer Side is a superbly-balanced fusion of eccentric comedy,  melodrama, and tenderness. Set in the Canary Islands, the film centres on the trials and tribulations of a wonderfully dysfunctional family. Following the death of their patriarch, they navigate the choppy waters of family feuds, love, betrayal, friendship and burgeoning sexuality.

Three intersecting stories deftly explore the relationships of a new generation of young, attractive Argentinian adults in Federico Finkielstain’s debut Don’t Fall In Love With Me (No te enamores de mi). Each character struggles to uphold their own ideal of a relationship in the face of societal and familial pressures. As they deal with their own internal crises, and those of their partner, the same conflict arises: the impossibility of true love.
