Win Side effects on DVD
18th Jul 2013
Debbie McTaggart

I love a tense thriller which sucks you in to thinking you’ve got the plot sussed, only to throw you a curve ball at the end and Side Effects didn’t disappoint.

Director Steven Soderbergh takes a twisted look at the world of anti-depression medicine and just how the relationship between therapist and client can have a chilling outcome.

Charged with murdering her stockbroker husband, who has just been released from jail, Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara) relies on the defence that her new anti-depression medication had drastic side effects. Psychiatrist Jonathan Banks (Jude Law), who has been treating Emily, is called on to give evidence which proves this to be the case. Scrutiny is soon focused on Banks and his own life looks to be falling apart.

Banks turns to Emily’s previous therapist, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones, to get some insight into her condition and what he uncovers leads him to believe he may have had the wool pulled over his eyes.

This clever thriller is classic Soderbergh and shouldn’t be missed.
