This is one of our absolute favourite films this year. Frances Ha is the latest from Noah Baumbach (who we interviewed in issue 64, so it’s out to read now), and it’s his most generous and ambitious film to date. Something is different in Baumbach’s work this time, and it could be that the star of the film, Greta Gerwig, is also his writing partner and girlfriend. Hubba hubba.
The protagonist, Frances, is an aspiring dancer living in Brooklyn with her inseparable best friend Sophie (played by Mickey Sumner, the daughter of Sting). When Sophie gets serious with her boyfriend and moves out, Frances is left to find a place of her own and struggles to adjust to maturity outside the consuming friendship she’s always known. Shot in monumental black and white and scored by French New Wave composer Georges Delerue, it’s a celluloid fist-bump to the city of New York, the idea of best friends and the inner child that refuses to die.
