I’ve got an ow!

http://www.beyondthebump.com.au/2013/07/messpots/

Leave a comment telling me in 50 words or less your essential tips for surviving winter and the germs it brings.

Kids get sick, they’re designed that way, catching every little thing and building resilient immune systems… or something. I’m sure that’s a myth perpetrated by childcare centres as an explanation for why it seems that those germy other kids always make your kid sick. Dex is prone to ear infections and the poor little thing seems to have inherited my allergies – and ability to catch every sinus infection going then sharing it around the family and at three germs are about the only thing he will share willingly!

sick dexThis year has been worse than most so far – a chest, sinus and double ear infection, then gastro, another chest infection, a nasty cold and sinus infection, followed by six weeks of bronchitis that they thought would turn into pneumonia then another bout of gastro… and that was just me! Poor Dex has had a couple of double ear infections, the unholy trio (chest, sinus & double ear) a particularly nasty bout of gastro and another stomach bug that thankfully didn’t last as long. Plus, don’t get me started on all the sniffles in between and the cuts, bruises and scrapes that come from being a boy.

It’s hard to keep track of all those illnesses, when Dex was younger I religiously wrote down each time he was sick, his temperatures, if I saw a doctor and what medicine or antibiotics he was on. His allergy to dairy also made me a bit of nutcase for keeping notes, recording what he ate and every reaction, each attempted re-introduction documented more minutely than the last.

I haven’t been so good at the record keeping lately though – I couldn’t tell you much about his last ear infection other than the fact that I visited the doctor one week, was told nothing was wrong with him and on the following week was told off for letting it get so bad before bringing him in which as you can imagine went down a treat with me… Let’s just say these days when I call the practice I say that I am happy to see any doctor except that one! Oh and that his antibiotic was ‘the pink one’ – good thing we go to the exact same surgery almost every time!

For the last few weeks I’ve been using the I’ve got an ow! journal from MessPots to record Dexter’s illnesses, bumps, scrapes and bruises and I’m starting to think maybe I should buy one for myself.

The journal is an A5 size that has space for all the important information about your child, family medical history, any significant medical and dental events along with all sorts of useful resources like healthcare websites, first aid, allergy and children’s health contacts. The main journal part is so easy to use for record keeping, allowing you to record details of the illness, symptom or injury all in one place so it’s easy to see a pattern.

I've got an ow!
On Saturday we took Dex to the park, he had three falls from the equipment – he fell and hurt his hands as they broke his fall, half an hour later he slipped and hit the back of his head before finally tripping as he went up the stairs to the slide and split his lip. All small injuries that led to a lot of tears then an insistence on going back to play but it only took me a couple of seconds to write them down when we got home.

I’m actually really surprised how I’ve taken to this journal, it’s so easy to use and anyone can write in it – when I was sick mum had Dex a few nights to give hubby and I a break. Poor Dexter was ill at the time himself with a fever and chest infection and it was so easy to just hand her the book with the last time he had medicine and his protocol when she picked him up and even better to see her notes when he came home the next day.

I’ve got two journals to give away, each valued at $24.95 enter using the rafflecopter form below. Good Luck.
