Dalton Millican was a proto-outdoorsman in the Lake District of the U.K. He lived in a cave, led climbing expeditions and virtually invented the idea of sustainable living in the early 1900s. Today, he serves as inspiration for U.K. outfitters Millican.
Founded by a Lake District couple re-connecting with their youthful adventures, Millican makes hardy, sustainable adventure goods – rucksacks, shoulder bags, drink bottles, that kind of thing. Each of their products is named after a local friend, like Joe or Les or Martin.
Their website also tells the story in some detail about Millican's producers and suppliers, including Vera, who they coaxed out of retirement to hand-finish their products. And then there are the materials, including local Herdwick wool. Apparently it comes from a farm at the foot of Dalton Millican's cave. Full circle, right?
