Celebrate 21 years of Indigenous culture with AWAYE!

And you could win one of 21 copies of the book Gurrumul: His Life and His Music.

For 21 years AWAYE! has continued to bring you diverse and vibrant Aboriginal arts and culture from across Australia, and from Indigenous radio broadcasters around the world.

Produced and presented by Aboriginal broadcasters, it is Australia's only national Indigenous arts and culture program, and in August RN is celebrating AWAYE!'s 21 years on air with a month of specially curated programming: talks and music.

Tune in this month to hear about some of the defining moments in Australian Indigenous cultural history in the last 21 years, as told by prolific Indigenous artists.

Tell us your own, and you could win one of 21 Gurrumul books by Robert Hillman, published by ABC Books. See details on how to enter below.

COMING UP IN AUGUST ON AWAYE!

The celebration kicks off with an exclusive recording of Gurrumul performing live at the Sydney Opera House with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and is followed by a series of four lectures given by prominent Indigenous achievers in the arts.

3 August: Exclusive live recording of Gurrumul performing with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

10 August: Djon Mundine, art historian and freelance curator, on 21 years of the Indigenous visual arts industry, as it has gone from being a small ‘dot factory’ at Papunya to a multi-million dollar international trade. Plus, music from Lou Bennett.

17 August: Lydia Miller, Chair of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board of the Australia Council, on the growth of Indigenous performing arts–theatre, dance, film. And, Archie Roach performs in the AWAYE! studio.

24 August: Richard Bell, artist and provocateur, on the link between art, culture and socio-political activism over the past 21 years. Followed by a studio performance from Deborah Cheetham.

31 August: Nakkiah Lui, inaugural Balnaves Foundation Indigenous Playwright’s award winner, Australia Council’s 2012 Dreaming Award winner, whose first play This Heaven was part of Belvoir’s 2013 season. Plus, music from Jimblah.
