An hallucinatory cinematic experience that defies categorisation, the amazing and audacious Upstream Color is the highly anticipated second film from Shane Carruth, whose debut Primer won the Grand Jury Prize of the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and is widely regarded as a landmark of independent cinema.
Kris (Amy Seimetz) is derailed from her life when she is drugged by a small-time thief. But something bigger is going on. She is unknowingly drawn into the life cycle of an organism that appears to have overpowered her identity. Along the way, she encounters Jeff (Carruth), a familiar, who is equally consumed by the larger force. The two search urgently for a place of safety as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of their wrecked lives.
Upstream Color is an entirely original, mythic, romantic thriller that goes in search of truths that lie just beyond our reach. Both gripping and boundary pushing, it asserts Carruth as one of the most exciting and talented filmmakers working in cinema today.
