Irvine Welsh’s novel, Trainspotting, redefined indie movies and might single-handedly have been responsible for all those ‘toilet humour’ scenes we now see in cinema (who could forget that bit when one of the drugged-up protagonists dived into a dirty loo?).
Anyways, since Trainspotting, Welsh has written a host of other dirty, dirty novels including Ecstasy, Glue, Porno, The Acid House, and The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs.
Now comes Filth – which has also been translated into celluloid. And the storyline is insane!
A bipolar, bigoted, junkie cop named Bruce Robertson (James McAvoy in a standout performance) manipulates and hallucinates his way through the festive season in a bid to secure a promotion.
In short, Bruce is a scheming, misanthropic lad who spends his time indulging in drugs, alcohol, sexually abusive relationships, and “the games†– his euphemism for the myriad foul plots he hatches directed at workmates.
This flick throws political correctness right out the window and watches it crash below, injuring more people than a small war.
‘Filth’ hits cinema screens November 21. Cream hs 5 in-season double passes to see the film. To try winning a double, email your name, address and the Subject heading ‘Filth’ to cream@pobox.com no later than 5pm Thursday 14 November.
