How much do you love shopping? We’re guessing that the concept of just going to the mall (so long as it’s not for last-minute rush-shopping) make you feel all fuzzy and excited inside. Well, there’s one guy who was pretty much responsible for turning the modern shopping experience into a rather seductive affair – and his name was Harry Gordon Selfridge.
If the surname is familiar to you, it’s because Selfridge’s London is still voted the best department store in the world. And now, the story behind the man behind the famous store is available to view on Blu-ray and DVD.
From the producers of Downton Abbey comes the excellent drama Mr Selfridge, starring Jeremy Piven (Entourage) as the big man himself. While Selfridges, the store, is huge in London, Mr Selfridge was actually American, and Piven brings to the character the larger-than-life, only-a-yank-could-think-that-big pathos that’s definitely required.
Surrounding him are a host of colourful characters – from the fashionable Mayfair society to the glamour and backstage artistes of London’s theatres, to brash businessmen and smokey jazz hall hangers-on – this is a motley crew that makes Mardi Gras look tame.
