A harrowing documentary, Blackfish does for Sea World what Michael Moore did for the NRA. Bring tissues.
Exposing everything from the whales' violent kidnapping to their life-long imprisonment, the film blends footage of whale-on-human violence with interviews of the keepers who've since turned their backs on the publically traded company. And while the focus is ostensibly on how Sea World mistreats its orcas – the young Tilikum is the film's real star – the way it also mistreats human employees, by not telling them that killer whales tend to kill people when robbed of their dignity, is just as moving.
Also great is that, unlike Bowling for Columbine, Blackfish shines a light on an organisation many wouldn't have thought twice about. Given that Sea World's share price has sunk since the film's U.S. release, it's surely the best news our whale friends have had since Free Willy.
Blackfish is in Aussie cinemas on November 21 and thanks to Madman Entertainment we have five double passes to give away. To enter, email your name and address to giveaways@smithjournal.com.au.
