A Bill Bailey show is part rock concert, part political discourse, part philosophical enquiry. He delights in interesting words, accents and language, whether it's the dialogue in the Danish crime drama The Killing, popular acronyms recast for comic effect, or the absurdity of England's west country accent.
One of the show's many highlights is a bit about a trip to China and the madness of mastering Mandarin. The bit flows into a story about the rescue of an owl destined for the dinner table in a Chinese restaurant. In Bailey's hands, the routine is masterfully constructed with a spectacular punchline and, later, a rather sweet call back.
As in any Bill Bailey show, musical parody looms large. In Qualmpeddler, we're treated to the theme from Downton Abbey, in a Jamaican reggae style, and the BBC's Match of the Day in various guises.
An evening in the company of this comic remains one of comedy's surest bets.
