Jean-Marc Vallee’s Dallas Buyers Club is a story so fascinating it could only be true. It’s the 1980s. Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey, who’s the favourite to take home the Best Actor Oscar) is a straight, promiscuous, rodeo loving electrician, living it up in Dallas, Texas. He’s also proudly homophobic. But life takes a turn when he comes-to in a hospital, and is told he’s HIV positive. At a time when little was known about HIV, he’s given less than thirty days to live, and denied access to the only treatment being trialed at the time, a highly toxic drug the effectiveness of which is uncertain.
In this powerful story of a man unwilling to accept the fate dealt to him by the medical establishment, Woodruff taps into the world of underground pharmaceuticals, and becomes a kingpin of life-extending alternative treatments. Along the way, he strikes up an unlikely alliance with Rayon (Jared Leto, also nominated for Best Supporting Actor), a sleek but troubled drag queen, and a surprising friendship with a compassionate doctor (Jennifer Garner).
