There are some twins who claim to inhabit the same mind, and then there are those who seem only to have a birthday in common. The latter was the case for twins Olanna (Thandie Newton) and Kainene (Anika Noni Rose), two glamorous twins from a rich Nigerian family. After graduating, Olanna moves in with a revolutionary professor (Chiwetel Ejiofor), much to the shock of her family, while Kainene becomes a businesswoman and falls for a writer. As the two find love and struggle with their own personal dramas, the sisters also become entangled in the violence of the Nigerian Civil War.
