 COMPETITION: Fantasy fables

TWIST: The Magic Hour will feature at Newcastle Civic Theatre on June 24.

THINK you know the Grimm brothers' fairy tales?

Think again.

In The Magic Hour, showing at Newcastle Civic Theatre on Tuesday, June 24, Helpmann Award-winning actor and singer Ursula Yovich (Australia, Jindabyne) breathes new life into the fables collected by the famed German folklorists.

Yovich takes on multiple roles, portraying a range of female characters often victims of the tragic morality tales.

As a twist, these characters have been updated and dropped into the gutters and alleyways of bleak Australian life.

The one-woman show was penned by Australian contemporary playwright, Vanessa Bates.

Produced by Performing Lines WA, The Magic Hour brings the wild and wicked side of fairy tales to the stage.

For a night of stories with werewolves and a touch of magic, head to Civic Theatre.

The one-night only show on June 24 starts at 8pm.

Tickets cost $40 for adults, $34 for concessions, $30 for Civic Theatre season subscribers and $25 for people aged 12 to 21.

The Examiner has two double passes to give away to this show.

To win, send your name and contact details in an email titled "Magic" to ewatts@fairfaxmedia.com.au.

The winner will be notified by 5pm on Monday, June 23.
