Barossa Shiraz Discovering the tastes of the Barossa's regions

Ever wondered why some wines from a region can be excellent yet others be quite bland in comparison? It's an oft-asked question that isn't usually explained very well. Until now. Until Thomas Girgensohn wrote Barossa Shiraz.

So if you're a red wine lover and/or planning to travel to the beautiful Barossa Valley, then this book is simply The must-have book. We have two copies to be won!

This is the first book in Australia to dive into the terroir of a major wine region and it does it not with lists and dry facts but by delving into the variations of this great grape variety, the reasons they exist and what it means for the wine. Robyn says in her review that reading this book is a lightbulb moment – and so obvious, you wonder why no-one has written this sort of book in Australia before.

In Barossa Shiraz: discovering the tastes of the Barossa's regions Dr Thomas Girgensohn talks about the iinfluence of history on winemaking in the region and how the original settlers and their decisions impacted on today's wine industry. He then divides the region into eleven sub regions and explains the reasoning behind this in terms of terroir.

Each of the eleven sub-regions are then grouped into four sections:
1.The Central Valley – including the Lower Central Flats, Upper Central Flats and Eastern Slopes;
2.The Southern Valley – including Lyndoch and Williamstown;
3.The Western Ridge – including Gomersal, Marananga/Seppeltsfield and Greenock;
4.The Northern Barossa – including Moppa, Koonunga/Ebernezer and Kalimna, often left off the tourist map (there are no major wineries here), but home to many great vineyards, perhaps most notably Kalimna Estate, from whose grapes some of the Penfolds Grange blend is made.

 With a separate section lying to the east, larger than the other four combined:
5.The Eden Valley

With each section the author takes you through an overview, the terroir, the major wineries, tasting profile and vineyards.

The style of writing is readable and interesting and at the end you'll have a solid knowledge of Australia's mot famous wine region, with all its variations and quirks.

So prepare for the lights to go on! Enter below for your chance to win one of two copies of this excellent Australian wine book.
