THE horror genre is known for its hits and misses but when James Wan gave us The Conjuring (2012), it changed the game, reassuring all of us that there are still terrifying stories to tell and this month we are about to experience this once again…

You may have already heard of it, but if you haven’t THE WITCH is the latest horror film that is about to give you one of the most terrifying experiences. Director Robert Eggers won The Directing Award: US. Dramatic at last years’ Sunday Film Festival. Since then, his directional début about age-old witchcraft, black magic and possession has been praised around the world, creating much buzz for this well thought out story that “Eggers’ spent a numerous amount of time researching the era in order to make a truly eerie and authentic horror story.

“Set in New England, 1630. Upon threat of banishment by the church, an English farmer leaves his colonial plantation, relocating his wife and five children to a remote plot of land on the edge of an ominous forest —within which lurks an unknown evil.

Strange and unsettling things begin to happen almost immediately — animals turn malevolent, crops fail, and one child disappears as another becomes seemingly possessed by an evil spirit. With suspicion and paranoia mounting, family members accuse teenage daughter Thomasin of witchcraft, charges she adamantly denies. As circumstances grow more treacherous, each family member’s faith, loyalty and love become tested in shocking and unforgettable ways.”

It only takes one viewing of the trailer, and you can feel the chills going down your spine. This is not going to be your regular horror, in fact this is a God-fearing New England tale that brings the haunting and religious beliefs of those times against those who are cursed by evil spirits.

The music and camera work looks powerful too, capturing the essence of this period and the performances seem to be perfect, especially by new comer Anya Taylor-Joy in her star making turn as Thomasin.

So don’t expect your average jump scares here, instead this is a Gothic tale that explores the dark in humanity that in the end, will leave you feeling very unsettled. Oh, and maybe be careful for the family goat “Black Philip” …

To celebrate the release of THE WITCH, Moustache and Universal Pictures have 10 double passes to this terrifying tale To enter simply send your name and address to info@moustachemagazine.com, to go into the draw.
Go for it, give it a tweet!
