A lot of countries pass their independent film festivals through Canberra. Spain, Japan, Italy, Saudi Arabia. But what about the good ol' United State of America? Well actually, they do too.
We may give the US – and particularly Hollywood – a lot of flack, but look here: they’ve got their fair share of passionate, independent filmmakers, just like any other country. And just like any other country again, American filmmakers have got a lot of their own culture to unpack, explore and discuss with the rest of the world. So it only makes sense that we would have Essential Independents: American Cinemas, Now bringing such films to Canberra as The Fits, an unhurried and fluid coming of age story that follows an 11-year-old tomboy (Royalty Hightower) as she looks for a place to belong.
Thanks to our friends at Palace Electric, we have two double passes to giveaway to The Fits, Saturday May 21 at 8:45pm. What's more, the film's director Anna Rose Holmer will be in attendance for a Q&A at the end of the screening! So you don't have to talk about the film while you're walking through the cold back to your car – you can stay in the cinema and chat to the filmmaker about it! To win one of two double passes, all you have to do is email
allan@bmamag.com and tell us the most "American" snack you could possibly bring with you to the cinema.
