Starring Kate Beckinsale, Chloë Sevigny, Tom Bennebt and Australian Xavier Samuel in his first romantic lead role, Love & Friendship is an adaptation of young Jane Austen’s novella, Lady Susan.
Set in the 1790s, earlier than most Austen novels, Love & Friendship concerns beautiful young widow Lady Susan Vernon (Beckinsale) who has come to Churchill, the estate of her in-laws, to wait out colourful rumours about her dalliances circulating through polite society.
While there, the intelligent, flirtatious, and amusingly egotistical Lady Vernon is determined to be a matchmaker for her daughter Frederica (Morfydd Clark) – and herself too.
She enlists the assistance of her old friend Alicia (Sevigny), but two particularly handsome suitors complicate her orchestrations.
Love & Friendship has the things you would expect from an Austen adaptation: romance, beautiful period costumes and settings, as well as plenty of gossip and drama – but this film has an interesting edge that sets it apart. It is witty, with wickedly humorous quickfire dialogue providing refreshing appeal to the beautiful costume drama.
