Ken Loach’s film I, Daniel Blake, which sparked much political discussion in the UK, has just won the award for ‘Outstanding British Film’ at this year’s BAFTA awards. The film has already won a slew of awards including the prestigious Palme d’Or in Cannes, and it has received rave reviews in Australia and internationally. The film’s Australian box office has surpassed Loach’s previous Palm d’Or winner, The Wind that Shakes the Barley.
Daniel Blake (59) has worked as a joiner most of his life in Newcastle. Now, for the very first time, he needs help from the State. He crosses paths with a single mother Katie and her two young children, Daisy and Dylan. Katie’s only chance to escape a one-roomed homeless hostel in London has been to accept a flat in a city she doesn’t know, some 300 miles away. Daniel and Katie find themselves in no-man’s land, caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy.
I, Daniel Blake is a deeply moving and powerful portrayal of two innocent people caught up in the welfare system and struggling to make ends meet. I, Daniel Blake will be available on DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital Download March 22, 2017.
