Set in Santa Barbara in the summer of 1979, the film centres on Dorothea (Bening), a single mum who is raising her teenage son, Jamie (Zumann), at a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion. To help guide him through life, she enlists the help of two younger women; Abbie (Gerwig), a free-spirited punk living as a boarder in Dorothea’s home; and Jamie’s crush Julie (Fanning), a provocative and world-weary teen. Based on the real-life women who have inspired Mills, 20th Century Women is a poignant love letter to the people who raise us and the times that shape us.
