GET TO KNOW NAGANO CITY
For many travellers to Japan, Nagano means skiing, snowboarding and snow monkeys. Winter is one of the best times to experience ‘The Roof of Japan’, a heavy snowfall area which is home to 15 of the country’s 23 peaks exceeding 3,000 metres. Nagano City lies in northern Nagano on the Zenko-ji Plain, just 79 minutes from Tokyo aboard the bullet train. At the city’s Togakushi Ski Area, the cute ninja mascot character Togakkii welcomes riders of all levels to enjoy the fine, dry powder that blankets Nagano from December to April. With more than 20 courses for all riders, it is a popular destination with a family-friendly theme park atmosphere. Also nearby in the Northern Japanese Alps are the legendary deep powder resort areas of the Hakuba Valley, Nozawa Onsen and Shiga Kogen. With other major local attractions including Zenko-ji Temple, a National Treasure of Japan, Nagano City is an impressive and entertaining destination with an unforgettable fusion of nature, history and culture.
FOUR MUST-DO’S WHEN VISITING NAGANO CITY
nagano2017-4-must-do01
See Zenko-ji Temple glow with the enchanting colours of the Nagano Tomyo Festival in mid-February

Held annually since the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, the Nagano Tomyo Festival showcases ‘lights of peace’ in the grounds of Zenko-ji Temple during mid-February. Peace was part of the theme of the Winter Olympics in Nagano, and centred around the five Olympic colours, the colour projections and lantern displays of this festival are held in honour of the Olympic spirit. Festival program highlights also include a torch relay from Nagano Station to Zenko-ji Temple, and the Nagano Food and Sake Tasting Event, featuring fine local food and drink.
Experience a traditional temple stay at a Nagano City shukubo, and meditate on ancient temple town culture

Established as a pilgrimage site some 1,400 years ago, the Nagano City area is a profound place to experience a stay in a Buddhist temple. Known as ‘shukubo’, temple lodgings are dotted around the city’s Zenko-ji and Togakushi areas, and guests are invited to participate in activities such as Zazen meditation, sutra copying and morning prayer. Also featuring immaculate Zen gardens and amazing ‘shojin ryori’, a type of Buddhist vegetarian cuisine, the shukubo of Zenko-ji and Togakushi are a living window into the temple town culture of Nagano City.

Visit the world-class snow resorts of northern Nagano Prefecture, and see the famous snow monkeys relaxing in a hot spring

Set in the birthplace of the Togakure ninja school, Nagano City’s own Togakushi Ski Area adds a unique twist to the amazing powder and terrain that makes northern Nagano a renowned winter sports destination. The ‘Ninjya Slope’ is a must-ride here, with a slalom section, waves, corners and a tunnel, as well as a secret forest with igloos. Meanwhile, at Park 9, ninjas of all skill levels hone their technique on a variety of terrain features, and the Champion Course offers the thrill of steep inclines over 30 degrees. There are more than 20 courses for all levels at Togakushi Ski Area, and lessons are available for developing ninjas. Togakkii, its playful ninja mascot, invites youngsters to enjoy the kids snow park and Togakkii kids course, while for baby ninjas, there is a kids play room inside Guest House Iwato.
With the 11 resorts of the Hakuba Valley also 70 minutes away, and Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort 75 minutes away from Nagano Station by bus, Nagano city is ideally situated for exploring the best of northern Nagano in winter. Averaging well in excess of ten metres of fine, dry powder snow every season, these resorts featured in the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and have the perfect balance of a lively international atmosphere, traditional culture and stunning terrain. Don’t leave without seeing the snow monkeys of Jigokudani Monkey Park, an easy day trip away from Nagano City, which deserve a place on every visitor’s bucket list!
Time-travel to the samurai estates of the Matsushiro Castle area, and infiltrate the ninja training centre of Togakushi

Around 30 minutes from Nagano Station by bus, the Matsushiro Castle area is a monument to Nagano City’s samurai heritage. Try Japanese archery and swordplay here at the Bunbu Literary and Military School, and don’t miss the Matsushiro Castle Ruins, the Sanada Residence or the Sanada Treasures Museum. Meanwhile, in the cedar forest of the Togakushi area some 70 minutes by bus from Nagano Station, the Togakure Ninpo Museum, Togakushi Folk Museum and Ninja Trick House reveal the arts of the Togakure ninja clan. Climb up to Togakushi Shrine, and enjoy the breathtaking view across Kagami-ike pond (‘Mirror Pond’).
