A TRAVEL photography book that's also about cultures and how experiencing foreign lands and their people can open your mind and heart.

That's how Sydney-based travel writer and photographer Ben Farrell describes his first book, Capture the World - The Ultimate Guide to Evocative Travel Photography & Inspired Digital Storytelling.

Farrell shares insights from his 25 years behind the lens, during which time he has circumnavigated the globe.

"I love travel photography because it's a medium that is all about capturing the unfamiliar and documenting what we don't know," he said.

"Getting behind the lens in a foreign culture makes you vulnerable and strips you of ego and opens your perception to a new world of sensory experience."

Farrell believes that as we grow and learn in life, we begin to create filters and labels we use to categorise what we think we know. We no longer see the world as it is, but instead we see what we think we "know" to be.

"We miss so much," he said. "We stop appreciating the raw, present experience and instead we edit, rehearse and re-run life in our head ... the biased director's cut.

"Travel has the power to break down this arrogant veil and get us seeing the world anew again."

Of course, there are also details such as how to master light, exposure and shutter speed; but it is also about "how to generate the right mindset to uncover hidden moments and capture beautiful experiences hidden in the mundane".

The Senior has three copies to giveaway. Entries close June 1 2020.
