REVIEW:
(From Emily @coffeebooksandmagic on instagram)
"This is a truly magical book that uses the whimsy of magical realism to deal with some very heavy topics.
In the acknowledgements, the author says this book was born when an counsellor asked her "what does the pain look like?" and that certainly goes a long way towards describing this book. If you have any kind of childhood trauma at all, I'm not sure whether to recommend you read this book or put it in the freezer.
In essence, it's a book about shadow work. It's a book about facing yourself, and all the parts of yourself you've pushed down or ignored. We do this because we think it will protect us from the difficult feelings, but this repression can have far reaching effects on our lives, which is what this book demonstrates. Only by facing our inner child and bringing things into the light of our awareness, can we start down the path to self forgiveness, self nurturing and healing.
This story is told from the perspective of Willa at three different ages - 8, 33, and 93. They all plant an ocean in their garden, through which they can visit each other. There are some really bad things that happen to Willa, and essentially it feels like a race against time to prevent some of those from happening - but the only way to do that is for Middle Willa to face up to the child she was and that she's repressed.
I'm not someone who cries easily in books but when I tell you I sobbed! Seb! Even though this story is heavy, the ending holds so much empowerment and hope. It's written so incredibly cleverly with so much heart and soul. If you think you can handle it, it's an incredibly rewarding read and it might just help you in the path of your own healing."
