Drawn from personal experiences from Iranian-Australian filmmaker Norra Niasari, Shayda follows an Iranian mother living in Australia, finding refuge in a women’s shelter with her frightened six-year-old daughter, Mona, as they try to forge a fresh start having fled her husband. Over the Persian New Year, they take solace in Nowruz rituals and new beginnings, but when her estranged husband re-enters their lives, Shayda’s path to freedom is jeopardised.
