Lovers Dance Academy is the latest LP from Close Counters and a bold new chapter for the Naarm/Melbourne-based duo of Allan McConnell and Finn Rees. Developed through live band performances and studio sessions, the songs are fueled by improvisational energy and creative exchange, blending house rhythms, broken beat, soul, and jazz elements.
The album celebrates the duo’s love of community and collaboration. Featured vocalists include Lyric Jones, Tiana Khasi, Allysha Joy, Jace XL, and Shiv, with contributions from a broader collective including Lucky Pereira, Annalisa Fernandez, Ryo Montgomery, and members of Mildlife.
Each track explores a different aspect of shared experience. 'On The Move' covers creative nomadism, 'Freedom We're Needing' and 'Feeling Takes Over Me' focus on liberation through movement, while 'Constant Love' and 'I'll Be There For You' look at personal relationships. The production balances jazz-inflected arrangements, syncopated basslines, and house rhythms, with plenty of space for instrumental exploration, vocal performances, and dancing.
